EPT Barcelona: Sahil Chutani finishes 41st; Sousa leads final 16


Everyone had eyes on the European Poker Tournament (EPT) Barcelona €5,300 Main Event in Casino Barcelona. The event added much importance due to two reasons. First, it is the biggest tournament of EPT Barcelona series and secondly, the exciting Day 4 witnessed our very own Sahil Chutani in action, who finished at 41st after progressing as the only Indian from Day 3.

The entire event saw 1,988 entries, but the field was further cut down to 16 players progressing to the final faceoff. The surviving players will move towards the final day on Sunday, September 1. The focus is upon the top prize of €1.6 million, which is a large share of the €9.6 million prize pool.

Leading the field on Day 4 is Portugal’s Rui Sousa who bagged 6,980,000 chips. Sousa is a frequent face at EPT Barcelona occurring over the years. He’s followed by Marton Czuczori in second place with 6,065,000 chips, a player with live earnings of $2.4 million. The other top stacks of the day include Yunye Lu with 5,490,000 chips, Balakrishna Patur with 5,470,000, and Pasquale Braco with 4,485,000.

Other well-known progressing players include Alexander Ivarsson (3,085,000) the winner of €2,200 EPT National High Roller just days ago, and UK’s Kully Sidhu (3,460,000) who finished 2nd in the €10K High Roller in 2015 in Barcelona.

Sahil Chutani carried his stack forward to Day 4, the only Indian to progress till the previous day and here, he grabbed his career-best live cash of €25,650 (~INR 20.26 Lakh). The young Indian entered Day 4 with 1,170,000 and ultimately busted at 41st in the record-breaking event.

Few big names that were unable to make it through to Day 5 of the flagship event were Isaac Haxton finishing at 18th position, €1,100 National champion Markku Koplimaa at 28th position, Simon Mattsson at 39th, and €100,000 High Roller winner Sergi Reixach at 48th.
