Winning a poker series which offered 25+ Crore GTD is no small feat. With a sea of players batting it out like there’s no tomorrow, the winner of the Main Event (ME), deserves all the attention he can get. It is not just about beating competition and nailing the title for a handsome prize money, there’s a lot that goes into shipping a coveted ME title.
Not often we hear stories of hard work, ups and downs, we hear more of victories and what comes along but the years of prep and toil often go unheard. But we wanted the story of Dhinesh Kumar (Spartan Poker Legend Nov 2022 Main Event winner) to inspire all those looking to start a journey in poker and go pro.
We asked this 27-year-old poker pro about his background to which he replied saying that he is an engineer in electronic communication and recently moved to the city of dreams—Mumbai. We obviously wanted to know when Kumar started his journey in poker.
The online reg said that he started playing when he was in his final year of engineering. He further goes on to add how it was a really tough decision to not take up a cozy job at an MNC which offers a steady flow of income and went ahead to pursue his passion for poker. But a career in poker was no walk in the park and Kumar’s insights are proof. He mentions how poker remains to be a grey area due to the legal hassles and how it’s not a conventional career option to choose.
But Kumar managed to convince his parents and allow him two years to make an impact as a player or else he would take the normal job route. Kumar sure made a splash on the felts with his recent Legend Main Event victory and we are sure more wins are coming. We cannot miss out on mentioning that Kumar has 133 online poker titles to his credit and oh boy that is pretty impressive. We had to ask the pro about winning those many titles and what his prep is like before a tourney.
Kumar said that he never keeps a track of the number of online titles he’s won and had no clue the number stood at 133. But he does add that eating healthy food, getting good sleep before the long grind and studying / reviewing 30 minutes before the game is quite helpful before you start a game.
Coming to Spartan Poker’s Legend series, we asked Kumar what attracted him to this event. He said that Legend series like other series on Spartan Poker came with massive GTD which was highly attractive and as a pro he was sure to grind. Kumar highlights how poker series with lofty guarantees are important for the community and players.
Are you wondering if we asked Kumar about winning the prestigious Legend Main Event? We did ask! The pro said that it felt really great to win his first Main Event title in a marquee series like Legend on Spartan Poker. The cash prize won by Kumar also happens to be his largest online cash till date (cherry on top we say).
We asked Kumar one last question before we concluded our fun conversation. What is that? Well, we wanted to know what’s the one message he would like to share with aspiring poker players. The pro who goes by the moniker Kendralust on Spartan Poker said that if anyone wants to take up poker professionally they must get some suggestions from players who have been in the circuit for a minimum of five years as they will surely know the ups and downs of this game. Aspiring players also need to get guidance from pros and strictly follow bankroll management (BRM). Kumar draws attention towards BRM as it decides whether you go broke or scale greater heights.
