Hailed by many critics as one of the best films of 2019, Uncut Gems is an anxiety inducing movie about one man’s unquenchable thirst for gambling. Set in New York city the movie follows Howard Ratner (played by Adam Sandler) as he tries to obtain a rare black opal to clear his gambling debts. If you are up for something that is going to keep you glued to the screen, then this one is a definite must watch.
Adam Sandler is known for his iconic comedies, but the actor embodies the character of Ratner surprisingly well. Sandler does a phenomenal job in portraying the Jewish-American gambling addict, drawing the audience to experience the character more intensely. The movie is anxiety inducing and frustrating at some points, which is why it’s able to keep the audiences at the edge of their seats. Without any major fight sequences, Uncut Gems rides high on tension and drama to keep viewers entertained and thrilled.
Besides its rave reviews, Uncut Gems’ portrayal of gambling addiction through its titular character is relevant and empathetic. Howard Ratner makes illogical decisions and turns a deaf ear to reasoning due to his inability to quit gambling. The movie takes this irrationality and uses it as tool for both comic relief and as a shock factor.
With well-known celebrities like The Weeknd and Kevin Garnett featuring in the movie as themselves, Uncut Gems is truly engaging from start to finish. The movie is on Netflix, so be sure to give it a watch whenever you’re looking for flicks on gambling or the consequences of its addiction, woven into the screenplay in a flawless manner.
