Abhinav Iyer leads Day 1A of PPWC Main Event in Manila

Everyone’s currently talking about the 2019 PPPoker World Championship which kicked off a couple of days back, on 15th February 2019. The main attraction was obviously going to be the PHP 20 million GTD Main Event, but everyone was also watching out for the Teams Event, where 10 countries signed up but unfortunately, Team India wasn’t able to progress to Day 2.

However, the players weren’t going to leave Resorts World Manila without some big achievements, so they signed up for the Main Event, each paying the PHP 55,000 (~INR 75,000) buy-in. A total of 64 players signed up to the action, with no same day re-entries allowed and eventually, only 22 of them progressed from this starting flight on Day 1A.

Now it so happened that there wasn’t just one or two or three, but four Indians in the mix, including three right at the top, so we’re expecting plenty good news to come in the next couple of days. Our very own APT Vietnam Main Event champion Abhinav Iyer (pictured above) is leading the chip counts with a healthy stack of 250k, followed by Kalyan Chakravarthy (pictured below) in second place with 206k in chips.

While the third place in chip counts is occupied by local player Mark Aguilar, India’s first WSOP bracelet winner Aditya Sushant emerged with the fourth highest stack, taking away a bag of 116k chips at the end of the night. Also progressing from Team India was the veteran Jasven Saigal, who is short stacked currently, with 19k chips in his bag.

Talking about Iyer, he was slowly chipping up all day, but the turning point came towards the latter half when he took out all of Alex Lee’s stack, winning with a set over two-pair, from where he held the lead comfortably. These 22 players will now progress to Day 2, which will be played on 19th February 2019.

Top 10 chip counts after Day 1A:

  1. Abhinav Iyer – 250,000
  2. Kalyan Chakravarthy – 206,200
  3. Mark Anthony Aguilar – 197,700
  4. Aditya Sushant – 116,200
