8 arrested in Gambling Den Bust in Thane

Despite the ongoing pandemic the number of gambling dens in the city have been on a steady rise. The country has come to a standstill as they have set safety measures and social distancing norms in order to keep a track of the virus that has been spreading rapidly. 

The Thane (Rural) police had launched a crackdown, but despite the efforts gambling activities have only been increasing. A raid conducted by the Local Crime Branch (LCB) unit at a hotel in Kashimira reveals that another gambling den was busted yesterday. The local police and the Anti-Human Trafficking Unit (AHTU) of the Thane (rural) police under the instructions of SP Dr. Shivaji Rathod and additional SP Sanjay Kumar Patil busted the gambling activities at the hotel. 

A tip off by the local police helped access the gambling den at a temporary shed located near the Delta garden area in Mira Village of Kashimira. At the shed, the police found 8 people who were placing huge stakes on card games. The police seized INR 38,000 and materials that were used for gambling from the accused.  They have been booked under Section 3 and 4 of the Public Gaming Act 1867. Apart from this, the accused have also violated the strict rules of the pandemic, which have been implemented by the state to contain coronavirus, said the police. 

While some sources believe this has increased during the month of Shravan, a month that is considered holy for the Hindus in Maharashtra. People believe that during the festive month, engaging in gambling activities has always been the norm. This month has led to a rise in organized and unorganized gambling in the city. Apart from hotel rooms and clubs, flats are being rented out to groups for gambling sessions which go on till the early hours, sources said.
