2022 EPT Monte Carlo Crowns Its First Brazilian Winner

In a first, the 2022 PokerStars European Poker Tour (EPT) crowned a Brazilian as its Main Event winner. Marcelo Simoes Mesqueu grabbed his maiden EPT Main Event (ME) title for his home country in Monte Carlo for €939,840. This win represents by far the heftiest cash grab by the Brazilian player from a prize pool of €5,204,050. Mesqueu topped the table from an entry field of 1,073 players. The 2022 EPT Monte Carlo €5,300 Main Event was the second biggest in the history of the Le Sporting Monte Carlo stop of the tour.

The runner-up was Morten Hvam. The second place finisher took home a prize money of €564,640. The heads up duel between the Brazilian and Dane was quite short-lived. On the final hand, Hvam raised to 500,000 from the button position with Kc Td. Mesqueu took the three-bet route for 1,300,000 with Kh Kd. Hvam made the call with more than a quarter of his remaining chips.

The 9d 7d 6s flop gave Hvam a gutshot straight draw. Mesqueu again bet 1,000,000. Hvam added 3,400,000 to the pot and got called by Mesqueu. In a nail-biting moment 5s fell on the turn which gave the Dane some outs for a split pot conclusion. But that never happened as Jd fell on the river. After a moment of silence, the Brazilian rail exploded with joy. The €1,100 France Poker Series (FPS) Main Event winner, Lucas Scafini lifted Mesqueu into the air after the latter made his country proud by winning an EPT ME title.
