Kalyan Chakravarthy 2nd in Doupai Cup for HK$ 790,000
The last few months have been pretty good for the poker industry in India and even for our Indian poker players taking part in various tournaments across the globe. Kunal Patni started the year well, making a few deep finishes in Berlin, while Vinay BK recently finished 4th in the Baby Dragon Event at MPC 28.
Another huge result came the way of one of our Indian players, when Kalyan Chakravarthy grinded long and hard at the inaugural Doupai Cup Main Event held at the Macau Billionaire Poker room, Macau, finishing at second place. The HKD 3 million guarantee was smashed with a field of 265 entries taking the overall prizepool to HKD 4,164,210 and everyone would've had their eyes on that top prize!
A total of 27 players would eventually make it to the money and India's Kalyan Chakravarthy was right up among some of the best in the business, finishing 2nd for a massive prize of HKD 790,000 (~INR 64.9 lakhs). He was among the top 5 chip stacks right through Day 1 and Day 2 of the Main Event and eventually reached heads up with China's Chen Guangcheng, where he couldn’t hold on to his advantage and eventually had to settle for 2nd place after the two cut a deal with each other.
While Chakravarthy finished with the best live poker win of his career, other Indians also did exceptionally well at the event, like Sumit Sapra (16th), Rahul Melwani (15th) and Alok Birewar (12th). On the other hand, Guangcheng also bagged his highest career win, securing HKD 850,000 for the top prize. Gutshot had a word with Kalyan, and he's what he had to say about this experience:
"The overall experience has been great. It's fun to play with Asian fields and yeah, it's great that I made a large stack right on Day 1 itself. From there, it was almost like never looking back and we kept on building stack further. Eventually we did good. This big win is needed for me as I was waiting for this score since some time and even missed narrowly during APT December when on Day 2, I, being one of the chip leaders, lost to the chip leader Michael Soyza when around 35 people were left.
Yeah, he was bluffing on turn with open ender and gets it in and we call only to see him clipping on river. So finally this time fortunately, I never had to fight with any chip leader as I was in dominating chip lead for most of the time. I am happy finally..."
2018 has started very well for Indian poker players playing internationally. We would like to congratulate Kalyan for this big win and hope that Indian players keep making headlines in major poker tournaments abroad. For all updates on these poker tournament wins, keep watching GutshotMagazine.com!
